World Porridge Day
World Porridge Day post 10th Oct 2021

It’s World Porridge Day!
Porridge is a great source of fibre, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants and a great way to start your day.
Need more oats? try double oats porridge and soak the oats overnight in some oat milk for a super creamy bowl!
The first world porridge day started back in 2009 and was organised to raise funds for the charity Mary's Meals to aid starving children in developing countries. Mary's Meals feeds more than two million children in 19 countries around the world every school day. In Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the children are normally served steaming mugs of porridge enriched with vitamins to help them learn and grow. That’s why we celebrate World Porridge Day – we know porridge has the power to change lives.

Fun facts:
Did you know? In Scotland, farmers used to pour leftover porridge into a ‘porridge drawer’ at breakfast, where it would dry out, ready to be cut into slices and taken as an on-the-go lunchtime snack.
Health Benefits of Oats and Porridge:
Porridge can be a very healthy and beneficial meal for the body. It’s especially great to eat in the morning, as the body has lost a significant amount of nutrients overnight. Porridge helps to replenish them.
Studies have shown that a regular diet that includes porridge offers a variety of health benefits to humans, such as:
- Rich in fibre. Many adults don’t have enough fiber in their diets today so porridge is a great way to add fiber that is vital to keeping the digestive system flowing.
- Vitamins and Minerals. Vitamins E and B, zinc, copper, manganese, magnesium, folate and iron are all included in porridge, making it healthful for adults and children alike.
- Energy Release. The high fiber in oat porridge slows the release of energy, helping the body to absorb the sugar instead of storing it away as fat.
- Antioxidant Rich. Whole oats are high in polyphenols and antioxidants, which can help to clean out the cells, lower the blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
